Duration: 8 weeks | 2023 Winter - 2023 Spring Project Type: Problem Solving | Industrial Design Goal: Design a screwdriver with an alloy screw-capture module to prevent screw loss in aircraft maintenance.

Problem

Alloy screws can fall during aircraft wing panel removal, creating safety hazards and risking the loss of critical hardware. How can mechanics prevent this common issue?

Initial Solution

During the initial interview, I collaborated with maintenance staff to develop a concept using a halved water bottle attached to the drill head as a temporary screw catcher. The solution proved highly effective in practice.

Catch + Storage

Through mockups, I explored three design directions for integrating the screw container with the cup and drill, focusing on usability, form, and assembly. I then tested a one-way valve container idea through trial and error, allowing screws to enter easily but preventing them from falling out.
